The Sasak people live mainly on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, numbering around 3.6 million (85% of Lombok's population).Little is known about Sasak history except that Lombok was placed under direct rule of Gajah Mada, the leader of the Javanese Hindu empire (1293-1527). Islam arrived into the area around the 15th century

Wooden horses are used in ceremonies for boys when they are to be circumcised.

According to that legend, the locals still hold the tradition strong that the nyale [sea worms] are the incarnation of Princess Mandalika. The worms appear once a year on many of the south coasts parts of Lombok

The legend says that a princes, in order to avoid violence jumped into the sea and the sea worms are a part of her that return each year to visit the people.
