Salt in West Timor
Following the 1999 independence referendum in East Timor, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people were displaced or forced into West Timor, Indonesia.
While the vast majority of these refugees returned to East Timor in the years immediately following, a significant, smaller population remained in West Timor, with many transitioning into long-term residents, citizens, or facing complex reintegration challenges by the mid-2000s.
