Karakoram Highway

Blog post and photographs by Peter Hemenway

The main highway is from Abbottabad in Pakistan and goes to Kashgar, the border town in China.

The trip I made started in New Delhi and completed about 10O km from Kashgar. I made this trip by bicycle and the last 100 km to Kashgar there was snow.

The mountains and people were often amazing to see.

As a teenager I had read about the Hunza people and their apricots that were part of their diet.

The Soviets invaded Afganistan in the 1979-89 and this resulted in a large refuge crisis in Pakistan.

I had visited Peshawar are at that time and before that made a trip over the Kyber Pass.

The natural beauty of both countries was what struck me. Pakistan nature seemed to have a wildness that was almost frighting. The nature was different energy than Nepal.
