KAE SA LUK

It is generally believed that the ancient art Kae Sa Luk (Thai fruit carving) originated in the city of Sukhothai about seven hundred years ago.

Servants of the king at the time were preparing for the celebration of loi kratong, a ceremony to honor Buddha.  Apparently one of the servants feeling creative began carving some vegetables into shapes of a bird and a flower, and then others followed, carving soap into animal and plant images.

Now Thailand is known worldwide for its beautiful carvings from fruit, vegetables and soaps.
