The island was initially inhabited by the indigenous Taino people, who originated in South America. The country is impoverished.

I have memories of the children running barefoot down hill on sharp rocks, memorizing homework by repetition techniques, and the general friendliness of the people.

There is a lot of natural beauty in the country.
