Amazon

In the early 1970’s I visited the town of Leticia, Colombia.

It was a long way from Providene, Rhode Islandwhere I started my adventure.

Stuck my thumb out on Route 95 and and arrived at the Mexican border, some days later. Walking over the bridge to the town of Nuevo Laredo, it was about 5:00 PM and as I entered the town I saw a somewhat large man on all fours running side motion similar to a crab.

Another distinct memeorie of Mexico was of watching the local people fishing with a line on shore for large sting rays in the ocean that is bordered by Tapachula.

Later in Colombia I was with two friends. We flew to Leticia and from there were bought a canoe.

Again I recall certain memories; in Leticia there was a rather large warehouse full of Jaguar skins, and later when we began what wa to be about 100 miles down the Amazon. One morning after spending a night camped with our canoe a youth came to were we were and then entered the jungle. About twenty minutes later he came back with a branch of bananas. I recall his gentlesnnes as well as his quiteness in manner.

We paddled about 100 miles and decided we had enough adventure and decided to wait for a boat back to Leticia in the town of São Paulo de Olivenca. we sold the boat and was given accommodation in a local jail building where we stayed for 10 days. While in this village another distinct memory is of someone that had butchered a Manatee and was carrying it on his back. At the time local, people were useing the sea cow as food.
